Meet Rachel Andrew
Rachel Andrew founded edgeofmyseat.com in September 2001. Rachel has over 11 years of experience as a web developer, being skilled in a large number of server-side languages; front-end development in CSS, (X)HTML and JavaScript; database design, development and administration; and technical project management.
Standards and technology
Rachel is a standards advocate, not due to any kind of ivory tower dwelling tendencies but because she has seen, in her own work, the difference that working to published standards and complying with best practices brings. She is a pragmatist and balances a desire to make the web accessible to all with an understanding that work needs to get done, on time and within budget.
Rachel is a long-term member of The Web Standards Project where she likes to get stuck into practical things.
Writing
Rachel is a published author of a number of books about web development, her most recent book being The CSS Anthology (2nd edition). Some of her work is listed on this site or you can check out her personal website at rachelandrew.co.uk.
Other interests
Rachel has a wide and diverse range of interests. She trained as a dancer and singer and has also worked in London’s West End as a stage technician, however the only involvement she has with the theatre these days is as a “stage mother”. She has a 1st class degree in Humanities with Religious Studies, gained with the Open University, and also enjoys digging up the past of her own family history. She finds that her arts-based background is often very useful in her work as a web developer as she brings more than just technical experience to the table.
